Marquette Wins FanDuel Legends Classic

Henry Ellenson scored 14 points in the second half and overtime to lead Marquette to a 78-73 win over Arizona State to capture the 2015 FanDuel Legends Classic championship.

In a game that was a physical battle from the opening tip and featured 11 lead changes and 11 ties, the margin of deficit never grew greater than eight points. The 11th tie came with 1:50 to play in overtime when Arizona State’s Willie Atwood’s lay-up knotted the game at 73-73. Fifteen second later, Duane Wilson made the first of two free throws and Marquette never lost the lead.

Ellenson ended the game with 18 points and 11 rebounds to earn MVP honors. Luke Fischer, who also earned a spot on the all-tournament team, also scored 18 to go along with eight rebounds before he fouled out. Duane Wilson scored 14 points, Traci Carter had 13 points, and Haanif Cheatham scored 12 points.

Tra Holder led the Sun Devils with 13 points to go with his six rebounds in earning all-tournament laurels. Gerry Blakes had 13 points and six rebounds, Atwood posted 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Obinna Oleka had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

In the consolation game, Cat Barber tallied 20 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists as NC State downed LSU, 83-72 in overtime. Barber garnered all-tournament honors for his effort.

Caleb Martin had 16 points and nine rebounds, Adbul-Malik Abu recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds, Cody Martin had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Maverick Rowan netted 10 points.

On defense, the Wolfpack limited LSU standout Ben Simmons to just six shots, of which he made one. He ended the game with four points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists in being named to the all-tournament squad after also posting a 20/20 the night before. Tim Quarterman led Tigers with 19 points. He also hauled down nine rebounds. Brandon Sampson had 18 points and Antonio Blakeney added 11 points.

In Subregional Round action at Kennesaw State, Belmont captured the title with an 80-55 win over the host Owls. Evan Bradds, coming off a career-high 30-point effort the night before, scored 17 points to be named the MVP of the Subregional. Amanze Egekeze and Craig Bradshaw also scored 17 points for the Bruins. Kennesaw State was led by Yonel Brown and his 14 points and 10 boards.

In the consolation match, South Alabama held IUPUI scoreless over the last 5:18 to claim a 78-68 victory. Ken Williams had 19 points and Georgi Boyanov had 17 to lead South Alabama. IUPUI was paced by Darrel Combs, who scored 18 points.
